The love for distressed leather is strong with the WaterField VIA Wallet. It’s a beautifully stitched wallet that carries a lot of your cards with confidence, offers multiple ways to hold your cash in a design that is simple, clean-looking and accessible. Distressed leather is a stunner and when you have everything made of it, it just makes you want to hold it in your hand 24/7. Did I mention it’s made of distressed leather?
I’ve used a lot of minimal wallets which translate into interesting designs and experiences. The WaterField VIA wallet is minimal by design but not minimal in function or size – it’s reasonably light at 49 grams and has a thickness of 10mm. It’s fairly compact for an all full-grain distressed leather wallet that is thick by material. But, it keeps a slim profile with a bi-fold design that gives quick access to cards and cash while secured.
There are 3 colours to choose from – grey, grizzly and black. The grey is a favourite of mine as the distressed look accents nicely over time, while the grey maintains a contemporary, modern look to it. With the WaterField VIA wallet, you don’t just appreciate the way it looks, but also the way it feels. I’ve really taken a liking to just how textured this feels in the hand. And that texture is what makes it exciting. The exterior and inner area gives that smooth yet leather rough impression. The card slots on either side stitch to the body, with that same texture inside.
Lifting that up is where you store bank notes – it’ll hold large notes of all currencies so that isn’t a problem, compared to ultra-minimal wallets that cater for smaller notes of currency. This part is also where the reverse size of the leather, giving that rustic, gritty and raw side to it for a completely different look and feel. I just love the way it feels in the hand. Honestly.
It has single stitching for clean exterior details besides the WaterField and Made in SF (San Francisco) embossing on the front. When details matter, you appreciate the small, meticulous touches like this, and not imprinted lettering which fade away over time. Maybe that’s just me. But I like the attention given to the WaterField VIA wallet, an everyday accessory with purpose.
It can comfortably store up to 8 cards in total (4 cards in either card slot). Anything more and it becomes too tight and difficult to slide out. This isn’t a fast access wallet since cards don’t have individual slots, but gathered together in one. However, it holds them securely, whether there is 4 cards or only one. The thick leather and stitching keep the firmness unlike other materials that loosen and lose hold over time. I really like the angled cut on both slots away from each other, which does make taking out a card and viewing much easier. It also gives the WaterField Via wallet a modern cut too.
Overall, this is a finely crafted wallet inside and out. The distressed leather is becoming a real favourite of mine, while the leather thickness actually adds to the carry experience in the hand. It’s by no stretch of the imagination the slimmest, most minimal or lightest wallet, but it doesn’t try to be. It is a swish looking wallet that looks the part, holds a good number of cards and cash importantly secure, and finishing touches that makes this tried and tested design a distinctive WaterField signature accessory. Oh, and that distressed leather if I haven’t mentioned it enough times.
WaterField VIA Wallet Verdict
A balanced wallet made of high quality distressed leather, modernised card slots and premium all-round feel. Cash can be fiddly to remove or store. Overall, beautifully made by WaterField.
