When it comes to lugging sets of lenses (especially telephoto) and camera bodies mixed in with a tripod, gimbal stabiliser and/or drone, a general backpack just won’t cut it. That’s where specialised camera-centric backpacks come in, with unique arrangements so you can travel with all your gear in confidence. The Bagsmart New York does an admirable job in storing my camera equipment, from the large to the small accessories in a way that is secure and organised to travel with. Exterior Overview of the New York

An industrial, boxy design of the New York with charms of it’s own | Buy it Now

Diving into the Bagsmart New York technicals, the camera backpack spans 32cm long, 44cm tall and 16cm deep. At the front you’ll find a front compartment with dual zippers which reveal 2 expandable pockets and a zippered mesh pocket. The top flap reveals a not-quite quick access section, but easier compartment to dive into that goes the full width. There’s an included zippered case for small accessories which I’ll touch on later, but is an amazing catch-all for small equipment or a drone.

Brown leather trims slot into a leather loop to give a sense of enclosure that contrast the black very nicely, accompanied with a bagsmart leather trim down the bottom. An elasticated side pocket can house your umbrella or bottle, while the other has two clipped straps and a leg pocket to hold your tripod. The design is devoid of any small side, front or back pockets. As a heavy-duty camera backpack, it weighs quite a hefty 2kg (4.6lbs) but common among these types of bags. However, the rugged nature, amples of space construction of generous padding makes it a worthy trade-off.

Rear Opening to the Tech Jewels

BAGSMART NEW YORK CAMERA BACKPACK REVIEW ONE TECH TRAVELLER GEAR LOAD
A rip-zip protective shield stops elements getting to your gear in the field | Buy it Now

So let’s first focus on some of the innards of the main compartment. A full perimetre zipper from the rear gives full, bright access into the main compartment, where you’ll store all of your core equipment. The back panel opens towards you with a laptop slot that stores up to 15″ (but I think 17″ would comfortably fit), held by corner elastic loops.

The protective guard is a big plus for me. When you’re out in the field and in dusty conditions, the guard is hugely helpful in keeping them away from your gear when you open it up. Working against dust, sand, gusty conditions or just being more discreet in the wild is never a bad thing. The guard screen is also a rip-zip, intently letting you ‘tearaway’ the layer from the zip tracks to reveal your stack. It’s pretty smooth and consistent with satisfying response.

You can see the tripod straps in action, holding a lightweight Manfrotto Compact Action tripod with ease. I’ve since upgraded to using my Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Alpha edition which is much more sturdy – prosumer and heavier – but the straps continued to hold impressively, even without the need for the tripod leg holder. When not in use, I tighten the straps so little excess hangs out, but it would be good to have some strap cover to compress them into the body for that clean aesthetic boxy frame.

Backpack that Doesn’t Hold You Back

You wouldn’t guess the amount of tech equipment is inside… because it doesn’t look obvious | Buy it Now

I’ve done my fair share of exploration with the Bagsmart New York – exploring the luscious greens of the Cotswolds, urban creating in the cities of Birmingham and London, taking a hybrid setup of photo, video and aerial equipment. If you’re happy to have a workflow of setting the bag down on the ground or table, enjoying the time to get setup, this is an impressive kind of bag to do so.

The generous ventilation on the back keeps my back from heating up and sweat-build up for longer with padding super comfortable to lug around all that gear all day. It’s pretty tall and big so for travellers, this would be your carry on. The amples amount of organised space will put your mind at ease when transiting by plane too. The water-repellent polyester adds further assurance when caught in the elements, while an included rain protective cover makes it fully sealed in the most extreme of weather. All-in-all, if you’re a travel photographer or outdoor creator that needs a carry which is durable, rugged and long-lasting, the Bagsmart New York is an affordable carry with a lot of performance goodness.

Main Compartment Combinations

BAGSMART NEW YORK CAMERA BACKPACK REVIEW ONE TECH TRAVELLER COMPARTMENTS
Internal setup is customisable and fits, drones, DSLR’s and mirrorless combos | Buy it Now

I’ve experimented with several setups, depending on what kind of camera gear I need to bring with me. This is just one example of a hybrid setup – a workflow that lets you work on the move, use a range of lens and an extra body for greater perspectives, aerial captures with my Mavic Pro drone and the Bagsmart Rosemead 3-layer tech organiser that slots perfectly in the upper compartment. I heaped a lot of praise on this simple, affordable, heavyweight organiser so if you’re interested check out my Bagsmart Rosemead review.

If you’re audio monitoring, video editing or enjoy music while in transit, my Sony Hear on 2 headphones slotted beautifully in this divider space I adjusted. There’s space to set your shorter lenses facing up and telephoto or high zoom lenses lying flat. It caters great for DSLR’s and their bigger bodies, but I found my range of mirrorless bodies and lenses to have their places with a few changes in the setup. The dividers can be removed and place along any of the side panels and other dividers with the lined velcro on the edges and body.

Over time, the divider’s do lose form and curves under heavy loads, but it doesn’t detract for the arrangement and separation from other devices inside. I did find they stuck well and held in place which is what you want.

Created for the Modern Camera Setup

30L capacity that feels compact and super comfortable | Buy it Now

I like my backpacks to be aesthetically pleasing and functional at the same time. The Bagsmart New York is an attractive bag with an understated, simplistic look. Designed in either black or army green, the contrasting colourways to the leather trim adds both a vintage and polish, with the rigid boxy design a striking, contemporary result. My Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Alpha held in place confidently, while the bag never felt big or obtrusive. For my wide shoulders and 6″0 height, it definitely feels good for me size wise.

It’s styled well to complement any outfits you choose across all four seasons of the year. I found myself using the main compartment for those extra essentials you need with you, while the front compartment was for my powerbank, cable and filters. The top lid house the included rigid zip case which stored everything small – wireless mics, batteries and of those nature for easy grabbing.

This is a camera backpack that emphasises rich storage, anti-theft and comfort. For on the move, quick-access and regular docking motions, you’ll find other Bagsmart backpacks tailored with that in mind. I had to move away from that habit, but quickly got used to the idea of laying the bag on the front and pulling out what I need. Pair it with the Peak Design Capture Clip on the shoulder strap for both a rapid workflow and comprehensive arsenal of tech to carry at your disposal. Impressive all-round.

Most Comfiest Camera Backpack

BAGSMART NEW YORK CAMERA BACKPACK REVIEW ONE TECH TRAVELLER REAR
One of the most padded and comfortable camera backpacks I’ve worn so far | Buy it Now

I used the Peak Design Everyday Backpack 30L before as my camera-centric backpack. It too weighs 2kg and features a different divider setup. However, when it came to lugging 12kg worth of gear, it was really grating on the back and shoulders. Little ventilation on the back and the straps digging into my shoulders. The sternum straps helped keep it stable while hiking in Hong Kong, Korea and Japan though my shoulders were left sore by the end of it, one of few gripes I had about the Everyday Backpack.

So with that in mind, I was surprised at how comfortable the Bagsmart New York was with the same weight of gear. But maybe I shouldn’t have, as the generously padding across the whole back panel and shoulder straps say otherwise. My back was drier for longer in hotter weather, while my shoulders simply felt great. They didn’t tire, get muscle aches or sores and that’s largely thanks to the thick padding and wide straps.

They contour my shoulders well and didn’t slide outwards, holding itself well. There is a sternum strap for extra stability and support, just a shame it doesn’t dock into the strap when not needed. But for sure, these are one of the most comfiest backpacks I’ve ever worn, especially in full camera load. Travel Photographers and creators will love that.

A simple boxy design with leather trims make for a nice modern and vintage look | Buy it Now

The Bagsmart New York certainly has a charm to it – rugged, versatile, accommodating and super comfortable. The boxy design and leather trim adds contemporary style to a vintage design. The plethora of front access and rear-facing enclosure will satisfy professionals looking for a quality, affordable option to take their expensive equipment, with an understated look that keeps prying eyes looking onwards.

With the Bagsmart New York, I’ve found it the most reassuring with how secure and protected all my gear are. The rear opening to the main compartments means even in the most crowded of places, my things won’t go amiss. And I have to reiterate how super comfortable this is. The 2kg weight is heavy in many respects, but on my shoulders and back it definitely didn’t feel like it. Day treks with this in the humid cities of southeast Asia or cosmopolitan of London, my shoulders and back didn’t feel the aches, strains and sores of lighter equivalent backpacks.

The included zip case is an amazing tool to stock my action cam, monitor batteries, wireless mics, lavalier, cables and extra drone propellers. Quality build and padding, the handle makes it super useful switching between backpacks and keeping everything in one place. If you want a heavy-duty backpack gear for hobbyists, enthusiasts and professional creators lugging plenty of camera equipment, the Bagsmart New York is a fantastically, graceful carry to wear for days.
