Air pollution is an ever-increasing concern around the world, directly affecting the quality of air we breathe into our lungs. In its second generation, the Airinum Urban Air Mask 2.0 refines on the fashion-forward, health hybrid face mask to tackle some of that effect on us. The Swedish brand redesigned the valves, improved air filter feel and better mask ergonomic fit, continuing to make these the most aesthetically pleasing, relevant health accessory today.
Airinum Air Mask 2.0 is very attractive to unbox. The Alan Walker edition – like many colour ways and editions – is displayed on the front sleeve, with the back showcasing what’s inside. Sliding upward reveals a modular set of smaller boxes. With the Alan Walker Edition you get this signaturised thank you card, marking the Airinum collaboration and the music producer to promote cleaner air.
One head strap and two filtration valves are the first things you see, before opening the thin, box that reveals the Airinum air mask 2.0. The Alan Walker edition also comes with a dog tag looped to the mask, with detailing that includes an invitation code to the World of Walker website. Underneath reveals more goodies – a high-quality, black zipper pouch to stow the Airinum mask when not in use and two sets of Airinum mask filters to complete the set. You get everything you need out of the box so let’s give it a try.
Progressive Health Masks with Style
So this is what it looks like worn on my face. Stylish detail on a conventional face mask. I’ve worn disposable health masks and fashion masks, but this is the first time I’ve tried a mask that brings both together. Health masks were fine, but were very thin, easy to come off, non-adjustable sizing and not enough coverage. Fashion masks looked pretty cool, however lacked any of the filtration system to filtering out air pollutants. They were thicker, stuffy to wear and too easy for moisture to build-up. That doesn’t feel nice and before you know it, you’ll want to take it off.
When I put on the Airinum air mask 2.0, I essentially wore both together which took some getting used to, but quickly noticed the difference in quality. Greater face coverage, comfortable to wear, more breathable (with caveats) and a more durable face mask that’s easily washable. It’s nice to know on bad air quality days when fine dust and pollutants are circulating around me, I have something working against it. It’s also something that is complimenting to my outfit, instead of standing out like a sore thumb. Face masks are the norm in South Korea and rightly so… air pollution can be quite awful.
A closer look at what makes this work, here’s an inside look of the Airinum air mask 2.0 put together. The mask filter secures to the Alan Walker mask with two velcro patches either side. The filters are high quality, and is really what makes the air mask filter all those air pollutants. The ‘health mask’ so to speak. The second generation filters are thinner and softer than the original, feeling more comfortable on the face and a little less stuffy to breathe with.
The valves additionally secure the face mask to the filter for a stronger hold beyond the velcros. I had no problem feeling like it was going to come off at any point which is assuring. I really like the foam towards the nose, soft and cushioning to the nose that molds to fit any nose shape or size. The valve’s are considerably different from the first generation, sleeker with a circle design and slimmer profile. The first versions were very bulky and protruded outwards; these are far more subtle.
The specifically-designed Airinum mask filters are rated to filter particles PM 2.5 – 10 (from dust and pollen down to smog, cigarette and soot), with multiple-layers to capture external air contaminants. These only work with Airinum Urban Air Mask 2.0 so you won’t be able to put these on the Urban Air Mask 1.0. I highly recommend reading about particulate matter-particles (PM) here to understand more about what those ratings mean and what kind of pollutants these tackle. In essence, the Airinum air mask 2.0 comprises of two pieces – the filter mask, the aesthetic exterior face mask and the valve that binds them together.
Airinum Urban Air Mask Performance
So what are the good and not so good parts about wearing the Airinum air mask 2.0? Firstly, I dig the extra material coverage around the cheeks, chin and fitted nose foam. It holds well, offers greater face protection and more breathing space. It also really helps in bitter cold weather or the wind to reduce the cold front to your face. It won’t replace a snood or merino wool layer, but it certainly does a good job.
The travel pouch is also worth mentioning as it holds my Alan Walker edition mask safely, knowing no contaminants, particles or material is rubbing against it. I carry the pouch in my backpack or inside my jacket so I can stow it away without much effort. The face mask is very well built, a nice soft material that feels durable and rugged.
I’ve generally been very happy with the filter performance of the Airinum air mask 2.0. It definitely helps in very dusty, polluted days. It took me some time to breathe with it however. While I definitely could go much longer wearing and breathing with the Airinum face mask than conventional ones, moisture still builds-up inside. By the time I’ve arrived at my location after a 20 minute walk, I find myself needing to wipe my face clean. It’s something you have to get used to, considering the fact you’re adding more layers and have it at such a close proximity to your mouth.
So it’s much better than other face masks, but still suffers from moisture build-up. I tend to loosen the strap to lessen the effect, but still tight enough that it’s secured against my face. Adjusting the nose tip or chin can also help too. While it removes the particles from smoke or cigarettes, the smell still passes through so it doesn’t block those smells if you happen to pass by (which is a shame but is a much finer particle beyond what the Airinum and most masks are capable of). Very solid filtering performance nonetheless.
Excellent Adjustable Fit
My Airinum air mask 2.0 is size medium which shapes against my face well. My head is quite small and long so good to get the right size for you, however the face straps are generously adjustable so I found it easy to fit them exactly how I want them. The extra strap is held down with a loop you can slide so nothing is left hanging if you opt for a tight fit.
The Alan Walker edition of the Airinum air mask 2.0 is very stylish, with a reflecting ‘AW’ logo on the left side, while the other is a solid black. The round valves on both sides are much thinner than the first generation and equally easier on the eyes. They keep a low profile while helping to extract exhaled air from inside for less moisture build-up.
You can attach the head strap loop that goes behind your head for added hold, however I found I didn’t need it for the everyday. The strap is quite finicky to fit on and take off while wearing it, making it awkward when I need to frequently remove it. The elastic material is stretchy and is well-built, but a better clasp or hook to easily attach and detach from the mask is needed. Fortunately, the mask fits how I want it so I haven’t had the need to use it much.
It’s not a matter of whether you can see it or not. Air pollution of all kinds are out there. Living in cities, surrounded by cars, smoke, oil and winds all contribute to contaminating the air we breathe and resultantly, what we put into our mouth, throat and lungs. The Airinum Urban Air Mask 2.0 reminds us to be conscious, more aware and take action in reducing the impact it has on our health. The replaceable filters are effective, improving on the first generation with a thinner gauge and softer feel that makes it more pleasing to wear.
Each filter lasts up to 100 hours or 2 weeks before needing to be replaced, with good value and better efficiency than using disposable health masks, or worse, breathing in air that you know isn’t good for you. The Alan Walker edition is super sleek, with that reflective logo and valve design for the fashion, style-minded, which ultimately is a way to reduce the friction and stigma of people wearing a mask. The Airinum Air Mask 2.0 is the best-designed hybrid mask that stresses the importance of health, with a sustainable ecosystem to consciously breathe better air quality for the future.
